There are some events where the atmosphere matters just as much as the agenda and this recent Crisis and Resilience Fund event run by Welfare Benefits Unit in York was exactly that.
Hosted at The Belfrey Hall on Stonegate, the gathering brought together local residents, researchers, policymakers, charities & organisations all committed to strengthening York’s local welfare safety net. It was an afternoon full of thoughtful discussion & shared experiences.
A candid & unobtrusive approach to event photography
For this event, we really wanted our photography coverage to feel natural, honest and unobtrusive. Rather than interrupting conversations or relying on heavy lighting setups, we focused on capturing real interactions as they happened.
The Belfrey Hall is a brilliant venue with so much character... though anyone who has photographed there will know it’s not necessarily famous for its forgiving lighting conditions! We were determined to work with the atmosphere of the space rather than against it. Shooting without flash allowed us to preserve the warmth and authenticity of the afternoon while remaining as discreet as possible throughout the event.
Highlighting important work in York
It’s incredibly important to us to be able to support and document events like this - gatherings that shine a light on organisations and individuals doing such meaningful work across the city.
The event marked the launch of the Improving the Local Welfare Safety Net in York 2026 Report, produced collaboratively by local community researchers, Lived Insights and Healthwatch York. The project was commissioned by the Welfare Benefits Unit, alongside City of York Council, Peasholme Charity, Citizens Advice York, Age UK York and York Foodbank.
Why events like this matter
We always feel privileged to cover events centred around community impact and positive local change. Beyond simply documenting what happened, photography can help amplify the work being done, raise awareness and preserve the energy of important conversations long after the event itself has finished.
York is full of organisations and individuals doing remarkable work behind the scenes and it’s something we’re incredibly proud to continue supporting through thoughtful, people focused storytelling.
